The trailer for the upcoming documentary on Sly & The Family Stone frontman Sly Stone has just been released, featuring archival footage of the legendary performer.
SLY LIVES! (aka The Burden of Black Genius), directed by The Roots’ Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, is set to debut Feb. 13 on Hulu and features interviews with musicians like Chaka Khan, OutKast’s André 3000, Living Colour’s Vernon Reid, Jimmy Jam, George Clinton, Q-Tip and more.
According to the description, the film “examines the life and legacy of Sly & The Family Stone,” noting it captures “the rise, reign and subsequent fadeout of one of pop music’s most influential artists, but also shines a light on how Black artists in America navigate the unseen burden that comes with their success.”
Sly & The Family Stone released their debut album, A Whole New Thing, in 1967. They had hits with such songs as “Dance to the Music,” “Everyday People,” “Family Affair” and “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin).”
