AI is the future, but is it worth the health risks?
New research out of the University Of California At Riverside reveals that the demands of computer processing increase levels of deadly air pollution. Scientists estimate it will cause more than one thousand yearly premature deaths by 2030. The electricity needed to train one advanced language model produced the pollution equivalent to more than ten thousand roundtrips from L.A. to New York by car.
How alcohol damages the brain.
Chronic alcohol use is connected to increased health risks like stroke, liver disease, and cancer. However, new findings published in Science Advances shows the mental toll of this abuse. Alcohol reduces our brain’s flexibility — making it harder for us to replace old behaviors with new ones. (Texas A&M University)
Can an eye doctor spot mental health issues?
New research in the journal Communications Psychology reveals a connection between paranoia and vision. Participants were asked to identify the movements of two dots on a screen. Those with tendencies for paranoid thinking confidently stated that one dot was chasing the other when it wasn’t. The scientists hope that this connection will help doctors diagnose conditions such as schizophrenia more easily in the future with a simple eye test. (Yale)
Do you have dry skin?
These tips may help. The dry, cold winter air and indoor heating can worsen eczema, but one thing that may help is to take less showers. Letting the skin’s natural oils build up can help keep in moisture. This can also be achieved by lathering up with lotion right after bathing. Another irritant may be your dryer sheets – so ditch any fabric softeners. Lastly, cooking with oils high in fatty acids – like olive oil – can help you maintain a protective skin barrier.
