Have you ever thrown on an old ‘90s thriller, something action-packed and a little braindead, and thought to yourself “Man, they just don’t make ‘em like this anymore?” By and large, you may be correct. But the exception to that rule is Jaume Collet-Serra. He very much does still make them that way.
Collet-Serra has made a number of banger action thrillers like Non-Stop, The Commuter, and Unknown, which all star a late-career Liam Neeson outwitting bad guys and fighting his way out of tough spots.
Collet-Serra is also the man behind The Shallows, a mean, enthralling, 90-minute thriller starring Blake Lively as a surfer stuck in the water, trying to outlast a shark who keeps stalking her position. These are the kinds of movies that Collet-Serra excels at making. Tight, neatly packed thrillers for adults. Movies that may make you want to wear your smartwatch to track your rising heart rate.
**His latest film is called Carry-On, and it stars Taron Egerton as an airport security guard who is working to thwart a criminal mastermind, played by Jason Bateman, who is trying to sneak an illicit carry-on bag onto a plane. With fun performances, thrilling action, and just a crazy plot that keeps audiences on their toes, Carry-On is one straight-to-streamer thriller that’s worth checking out. And if you like what you see, I’d encourage you to dig into Collet-Serra’s other films.
Carry-On is now streaming on Netflix.
